How Arizona paycheck taxes work

Arizona is worth explaining a bit differently than most states here, because Arizona's actual paycheck withholding doesn't work like anywhere else in this calculator: instead of a formula based on income and deductions, every employee picks their own flat withholding percentage on Form A-4, anywhere from 0.5% to 3.5% of gross wages in half-point steps (defaulting to 2.0% if you never submit one), with no deduction subtracted and no real connection to what you actually owe. Because that elected percentage tells you almost nothing about your real tax bill, this calculator shows Arizona's actual statutory tax instead: a flat 2.5% of taxable income after the standard deduction ($15,750 for single or married filing separately, $23,625 for head of household, $31,500 for married filing jointly, all set by a state tax law signed in June 2026). That means the number below is a solid estimate of what you actually owe Arizona for the year, but the amount actually withheld from any single paycheck could look quite different depending on the percentage you (or a past version of you) picked on your A-4. Arizona doesn't allow cities or counties to levy their own income tax, and there's no state disability insurance or paid-family-leave payroll deduction either.

Federal income tax is calculated using the 2026 IRS tax brackets after subtracting your standard deduction, based on your filing status. FICA is a flat 6.2% Social Security tax (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare tax, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Frequently asked questions

Does Arizona have a state income tax?

Yes. Arizona taxes wage income at a flat 2.5% rate. See the state-specific section above for exactly how that applies to your filing status.

How is federal income tax calculated on a Arizona paycheck?

Federal tax is calculated on taxable income (gross pay minus your standard deduction) using the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets, which apply the same way in every state, including Arizona. See "How Paycheck Withholding Works" for the full breakdown.

What is FICA and how much is withheld?

FICA is 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies the same way in every state, including Arizona.

Is this calculator exact?

No, it's an estimate based on standard 2026 tax tables and common assumptions. It doesn't account for every possible deduction, credit, filing situation, or local tax. For Arizona specifically, it doesn't include the state's new subtractions for qualified tips and overtime pay, since those are narrow exceptions outside a general paycheck estimate. See the disclaimer above the breakdown for details.
