How Iowa paycheck taxes work

Iowa taxes wages at a single flat rate (3.8% for 2026, the final step of a phase-down from a top graduated rate of 8.53% just a couple of years ago). Instead of the federal standard deduction, Iowa's own withholding formula subtracts its own deduction amount before applying the rate: $13,000 a year for single filers, $19,500 for head of household, and $26,000 for a married couple where only one spouse earns wages. Iowa also has a school district income surtax (most of the state's roughly 327 districts add anywhere from 1% to 20% on top of your state tax liability), but that surtax is reconciled on your annual return rather than withheld from each paycheck, so it isn't reflected in this calculator's estimate. There's no state disability insurance or paid-family-leave payroll deduction in Iowa, and no local or county income tax.

Federal income tax is calculated using the 2026 IRS tax brackets after subtracting your standard deduction, based on your filing status. FICA is a flat 6.2% Social Security tax (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare tax, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Frequently asked questions

Does Iowa have a state income tax?

Yes. Iowa taxes wage income at a flat 3.8% rate. See the state-specific section above for exactly how that applies to your filing status.

How is federal income tax calculated on a Iowa paycheck?

Federal tax is calculated on taxable income (gross pay minus your standard deduction) using the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets, which apply the same way in every state, including Iowa. See "How Paycheck Withholding Works" for the full breakdown.

What is FICA and how much is withheld?

FICA is 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies the same way in every state, including Iowa.

Is this calculator exact?

No, it's an estimate based on standard 2026 tax tables and common assumptions. It doesn't account for every possible deduction, credit, filing situation, or local tax. For Iowa specifically, it doesn't include the state's school-district income surtax, since that's reconciled on the annual return rather than withheld from each paycheck. See the disclaimer above the breakdown for details.
