How Louisiana paycheck taxes work
Louisiana rewrote its income tax from the ground up starting in 2025, trading its old graduated brackets for a single flat rate, and 2026 keeps that same simpler system. The statutory rate is 3.0%, but Louisiana's own withholding formula is set slightly higher, at 3.09%, the same kind of small built-in buffer North Carolina uses to avoid underwithholding over the course of a year. Before that rate applies, Louisiana subtracts a standard deduction: $12,875 for single or married-filing-separately filers, or $25,750 for married filing jointly, a qualifying surviving spouse, or head of household. One genuine upside of Louisiana's tax overhaul: the old personal exemption and per-dependent deduction were folded directly into this larger standard deduction, so unlike most other states in this calculator, there's no separate dependent amount being left out of the estimate here. No parish or city in Louisiana levies its own income tax, so the flat state rate on top of federal tax and FICA is the whole picture no matter where you live, and there's no state disability insurance or paid-family-leave payroll deduction either.
Federal income tax is calculated using the 2026 IRS tax brackets after subtracting your standard deduction, based on your filing status. FICA is a flat 6.2% Social Security tax (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare tax, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Frequently asked questions
Does Louisiana have a state income tax?
Yes. Louisiana taxes wage income at a flat 3.09% rate. See the state-specific section above for exactly how that applies to your filing status.
How is federal income tax calculated on a Louisiana paycheck?
Federal tax is calculated on taxable income (gross pay minus your standard deduction) using the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets, which apply the same way in every state, including Louisiana. See "How Paycheck Withholding Works" for the full breakdown.
What is FICA and how much is withheld?
FICA is 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies the same way in every state, including Louisiana.
Is this calculator exact?
No, it's an estimate based on standard 2026 tax tables and common assumptions. It doesn't account for every possible deduction, credit, filing situation, or local tax. For Louisiana specifically, this one runs closer to exact than most: the state's 2024 tax overhaul folded its old personal exemption and per-dependent deduction directly into the standard deduction, so there's no separate dependent amount being left out here. See the disclaimer above the breakdown for details.
