How Virginia paycheck taxes work

Virginia uses four tax brackets (2%, 3%, 5%, and 5.75%) and, unlike most bracketed states, applies the exact same thresholds ($3,000, $5,000, $17,000) no matter your filing status; only the standard deduction changes with how you file. That standard deduction is temporarily higher for 2025 and 2026 ($8,750 single or head of household, $17,500 married filing jointly) under a state law that's set to expire after 2026 and drop back down to $3,000 / $6,000 unless the legislature extends it. Virginia passed a new mandatory paid family and medical leave payroll tax in 2026, but the contribution rate isn't set until October 2027 and withholding doesn't actually start until April 2028, so it has no effect on a 2026 paycheck. There's no local or county income tax anywhere in Virginia: as a Dillon Rule state, its localities have no legal authority to levy one.

Federal income tax is calculated using the 2026 IRS tax brackets after subtracting your standard deduction, based on your filing status. FICA is a flat 6.2% Social Security tax (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare tax, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Frequently asked questions

Does Virginia have a state income tax?

Yes. Virginia taxes wage income at 4 brackets ranging from 2% to 5.75%. See the state-specific section above for exactly how that applies to your filing status.

How is federal income tax calculated on a Virginia paycheck?

Federal tax is calculated on taxable income (gross pay minus your standard deduction) using the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets, which apply the same way in every state, including Virginia. See "How Paycheck Withholding Works" for the full breakdown.

What is FICA and how much is withheld?

FICA is 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies the same way in every state, including Virginia.

Is this calculator exact?

No, it's an estimate based on standard 2026 tax tables and common assumptions. It doesn't account for every possible deduction, credit, filing situation, or local tax. For Virginia specifically, it doesn't yet need to include the state's new paid family and medical leave tax, since withholding for that doesn't begin until April 2028. See the disclaimer above the breakdown for details.
