How New York paycheck taxes work

New York's paycheck withholding is one of the most layered in the country. The state runs nine income tax brackets from 3.9% up to 10.9%, but its own withholding tables build in something most states don't: a 'benefit recapture' zone, roughly $97,000 to $265,000 for a single filer, where the withholding rate temporarily climbs as high as 11.44% before settling back down, so that high earners don't end up underwithheld once you account for the full-year effect of the lower brackets. On top of state tax, New York State also withholds Paid Family Leave (0.432% of wages up to an annual cap of $411.91) and a very small Disability Benefits Law contribution capped at $0.60 a week, which this calculator doesn't include since it amounts to at most a few dollars a month. If you live in New York City, pick it below: NYC runs its own separate resident income tax on top of everything else, with its own bracket schedule (2.05% up to 4.25%) and its own smaller deduction, genuinely different from the state's. Yonkers has its own local tax too, but isn't modeled here. There's no single flat number that captures a New York paycheck: where you live inside the state changes the math more than almost anywhere else.

Federal income tax is calculated using the 2026 IRS tax brackets after subtracting your standard deduction, based on your filing status. FICA is a flat 6.2% Social Security tax (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare tax, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Frequently asked questions

Does New York have a state income tax?

Yes. New York taxes wage income at 10 brackets ranging from 3.9% to 11.44%. See the state-specific section above for exactly how that applies to your filing status.

How is federal income tax calculated on a New York paycheck?

Federal tax is calculated on taxable income (gross pay minus your standard deduction) using the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets, which apply the same way in every state, including New York. See "How Paycheck Withholding Works" for the full breakdown.

What is FICA and how much is withheld?

FICA is 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies the same way in every state, including New York.

Is this calculator exact?

No, it's an estimate based on standard 2026 tax tables and common assumptions. It doesn't account for every possible deduction, credit, filing situation, or local tax. For New York specifically, picking New York City above adds its resident tax, but Yonkers' separate local tax isn't modeled. See the disclaimer above the breakdown for details.
