How Oregon paycheck taxes work

Oregon's paycheck withholding does something no other state in this calculator does: before applying its own tax brackets (4.75% up to 9.9%, after a $2,910 single or $5,820 married standard deduction), it also subtracts your actual federal income tax withholding from what's taxed, similar to Alabama, but capped at $8,750 a year and phased out entirely for single filers earning over $145,000 or married filers over $290,000 (that phase-out isn't reflected in this estimate, so high earners above those levels will see a somewhat lower number here than they'd actually owe). On top of state tax, Oregon withholds for Paid Leave Oregon, the state's paid family and medical leave program (0.6% of wages, up to the same wage cap used for Social Security). If you live in the Portland area, know that this estimate doesn't include two additional local income taxes that can apply there: Metro's Supportive Housing Services tax and Multnomah County's Preschool for All tax, both of which only kick in above six-figure income thresholds but can add meaningfully to a high earner's tax bill. Outside Multnomah County and the Portland metro area, there's no other local or county income tax in Oregon.

Federal income tax is calculated using the 2026 IRS tax brackets after subtracting your standard deduction, based on your filing status. FICA is a flat 6.2% Social Security tax (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare tax, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Frequently asked questions

Does Oregon have a state income tax?

Yes. Oregon taxes wage income at 4 brackets ranging from 4.75% to 9.9%. See the state-specific section above for exactly how that applies to your filing status.

How is federal income tax calculated on a Oregon paycheck?

Federal tax is calculated on taxable income (gross pay minus your standard deduction) using the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets, which apply the same way in every state, including Oregon. See "How Paycheck Withholding Works" for the full breakdown.

What is FICA and how much is withheld?

FICA is 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies the same way in every state, including Oregon.

Is this calculator exact?

No, it's an estimate based on standard 2026 tax tables and common assumptions. It doesn't account for every possible deduction, credit, filing situation, or local tax. For Oregon specifically, it doesn't include Portland-area Metro and Multnomah County local taxes, which only apply above six-figure incomes. See the disclaimer above the breakdown for details.
